What Is Somatic Breathwork?

Somatic breathwork is a type of therapy that focuses on the use of breathing techniques to address physical and emotional issues. It is based on the idea that the breath is connected to the body's natural healing processes and that by intentionally altering the way you breathe, you can access and release tension or trauma stored in the body. Somatic breathwork sessions may involve guided breathing exercises, movement, and other techniques to help individuals become more aware of their breath and how it relates to their physical and emotional states.

Somatic Experiencing Through Breathwork

The term Somatic is used to contextualize breathwork with Somatic Experiencing. It is based on the idea that trauma often gets stored in the body, and that by bringing awareness to and releasing these physical sensations, people can heal from their trauma. Practitioners of somatic experiencing use a variety of techniques, such as mindful breathing and body awareness, to help people regulate their nervous system and gradually process their traumatic experiences.

Releasing Repressed Emotions from the Body

Breathing is simple, don't be fooled. However, the process of understanding and releasing subjective trauma can be be complex. Each individual has a unique nervous system, and the breath is our most powerful gateway to regulating it. Different breathing techniques can be used to stimulate subconscious micro-traumas so that they can be released. The key in somatic breath work is to allow everything unconditionally. The breath work is used as an trigger so that the person can process that which had previously been repressed.
